What Is Towing Capacity?

The 2027 Kia Telluride, for example, can tow up to 5,000 lb. when properly equipped, making it one of our most capable options for families with trailers or campers.
The Key Numbers You Need
Safe towing involves more than one number. There are four key ratings every Kia owner should understand. The first is the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, or GVWR, which is the maximum total weight of your Kia Sportage or Sorento model including passengers, cargo, and fuel. You'll find this on the driver's door jamb sticker, and it should never be exceeded. Closely related is the Gross Combined Weight Rating, or the GCWR, and is the maximum allowable weight of your vehicle plus the fully loaded trailer together. If your Kia's GCWR is 11,000 lb. and the vehicle itself weighs 4,500 lb., your trailer cannot exceed 6,500 lb. — even if the published towing capacity suggests otherwise. Tongue weight is another critical figure. It's the downward force the trailer's hitch applies to your vehicle's hitch receiver, and it should fall between 10 to 15 percent of the total trailer weight. On a 4,000-lb. trailer, that means 400 to 600 lb. of tongue weight. Finally, keep payload capacity in mind, and this is the total weight your Kia can carry inside the cabin, including passengers and gear. Every pound of luggage and passengers on board reduces how much tongue weight your hitch can safely handle.
How to Do the Calculation
Start by finding your Kia Seltos or Carnival vehicle’s towing capacity in the Owner's Manual, then weigh your fully loaded trailer — water tanks, gear, and all. Confirm that the loaded weight falls below the towing capacity, then calculate tongue weight at 10 to 15 percent of the trailer weight and verify it's within your hitch's rating. Add that tongue weight to your passengers and cargo to make sure it is under payload capacity, then do a final check that the vehicle and trailer combined don't exceed your GCWR. Don't Forget the Right Equipment
Even if the numbers check out, you'll need a properly rated hitch, trailer brake controller for heavier loads, and trailer wiring harness. Kia vehicles can sometimes require a dealer-installed tow package to unlock full towing capability and protect your warranty.
